Drain Cleaning in Arcadia
Questions

Cost, timing and what to ask

The eight questions that actually decide drain cleaning, answered with published numbers.

What is the difference between a drain cleaning company and a plumber?

In California, legally, none that matters — and that is the useful answer. Drainage, sewer and storm drains sit inside the C-36 plumbing classification at the Contractors State License Board. There is no separate drain license to hold. What there IS, since 1 January 2025 under AB 2622, is a minor-work exemption of $1,000: below that figure, with no permit required and nobody employed on the job, no contractor's license is needed at all. Most drain call-outs are $150 to $450, so they sit underneath it. A 'drain cleaning company' is therefore often a business operating lawfully inside that exemption rather than a different kind of tradesman.

Is drain cleaning the same as plumbing?

It is a part of plumbing rather than a neighbor to it. A plumber's scope covers supply, waste, gas, fixtures and appliances; drain cleaning is one activity inside the waste half of that. The practical difference is specialisation rather than qualification: a business doing nothing but drains all day owns better cabling and jetting equipment and has seen more blockages, while a general plumber can carry on when the job turns out to be a fixture, a vent or a repair. Which you want depends entirely on which of those your problem turns out to be — and that is not always obvious at the point of ringing.

Will plumbers clean drains?

Yes, and most do. The more useful question is whether they will bring the right equipment. A general plumber will clear a trap or a branch without hesitation; a blocked sewer line under a long garden wants a sectional or drum machine and, if it has blocked before, a camera. Worth describing the symptom accurately when you call — one fixture or the whole house — because that determines what arrives on the van and whether the visit can actually finish the job.

What do plumbers recommend to keep drains clean?

Duller things than the internet does. Hot water down the sink after anything greasy, because grease is the cause of most kitchen blockages. A strainer in the shower, because hair is the cause of most bathroom ones. Not treating a waste pipe as a bin — no fats, no coffee grounds, no wipes of any description regardless of what the packet claims. Enzyme products monthly if you want a routine, because they digest build-up slowly without harming pipes. That genuinely is the list, and none of it is sold in a bottle with a warning label.

Why pour salt down the drain every night?

There is no good reason to, and it will not do what the videos suggest. Salt is mildly abrasive, so combined with very hot water it may scour a little loose residue from the trap. It does not dissolve grease, it does nothing whatsoever to hair or roots, and it will not move an existing blockage. It is also harmless, which is why the habit persists — nobody notices it failing. If you want a nightly routine that does something, run the hot tap for thirty seconds after washing up. That actually moves warm fat along before it cools and settles.

What are the signs that my drains are clogged?

In the order they usually appear: water standing in a sink or tub longer than it used to; a gurgle from one fixture when another drains; a smell from a drain that has been fine for years; and finally waste coming back up. The gurgle is the one worth acting on — it means air is being pulled or pushed through a restriction, and it is the earliest honest warning you get. The one that changes everything is any of this happening at the LOWEST fixture in the building when you use something else, because that is the main line rather than a branch.

How much should it cost to clear a clogged drain?

$100 to $275 for a standard drain in this area. A simple sink or tub cleared with a hand snake is $75 to $175; a kitchen line furred with grease is $150 to $300; a sewer line snaked is $200 to $450, and hydro jetting one is $350 to $800. If a quote is well outside those, the question is what it includes — particularly whether a camera run, a cleanout excavation or a repair has been folded into a price described as a clearing.

What to do if scammed by a plumber?

It depends on whether they were licensed, and that determines which route works. Against a LICENSED contractor, the Contractors State License Board takes consumer complaints and can investigate, discipline and in some cases assist with restitution — and there is a bond behind every license that a claim can be made against. Against an UNLICENSED one your position is weaker on paper but not hopeless: CSLB has an enforcement arm for unlicensed activity, and the minimum civil penalty rose to $1,500 per violation on 1 July 2026. Either way, small claims court handles amounts up to its limit without a lawyer. Keep the written quote, the invoice and any photographs — that evidence is what every one of those routes runs on.
